Azerbaijan, Georgia discuss political, security, economic and humanitarian aspects of strategic cooperation-UPDATED-2

Jeyhun Bayramov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with his Georgian counterpart Maka Botchorishvili on Thursday, APA reports citing MFA press service.

The meeting began with one-on-one talks, followed by an expanded session with the participation of both countries’ delegations.

Minister Bayramov congratulated Minister Botchorishvili on the successful conduct of the parliamentary elections in Georgia in October last year, forming of the new government and her appointment as a Foreign Minister of the country.

The discussions revolved around the political, security, economic and humanitarian aspects of the Azerbaijan-Georgia strategic partnership, as well as topical items on the regional agenda.

The FMs hailed the current level of strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Georgia. They underscored that the active high-level political dialogue provides a solid foundation for bilateral relations.

The ministers pointed out that traditional close contacts between the two countries’ various state institutions, reciprocal visits, as well as intergovernmental and interparliamentary pragmatic cooperation contribute to the Azerbaijan-Georgia strategic cooperation.

They commended the cooperation between the two countries in international and regional formats based on respect to both countries’ legitimate interests and mutual benefit.

Highlighting the Azerbaijan-Georgia economic cooperation, the ministers stressed the significant role of the large-scale projects such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars and the Southern Gas Corridor, implemented thanks to the successful regional cooperation between the two countries, in boosting economic development and social wellbeing in the region and beyond.

Touching upon the recent practical steps taken between Azerbaijan and Georgia in green energy and communication areas, the sides highlighted the significance of these ongoing projects.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of the Commission, which plays a crucial role in evolving bilateral and regional economic and trade relations amid the 10th anniversary meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Georgia to be held in Baku on January 17.

Mentioning the importance of the humanitarian aspect of Azerbaijan-Georgia interstate relations, the two stressed the importance of enhancing contacts, exchanges and collaboration in tourism, educational, scientific, and cultural domains.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov updated his Georgian counterpart about Azerbaijan's efforts towards the normalization of interstate relations with Armenia and the signing of the final peace treaty.

He also drew the Georgian foreign minister’s attention to the fact that the territorial claims against Azerbaijan in the Armenian Constitution and other legal acts, Armenia’s rapid arming and revanchist trends undermine the peace process. 

The meeting also addressed other bilateral and regional issues of shared interest.

The ministers then made press statements on the outcomes of the meeting.
